Right before tech

Origin Story

Off to sundance in july! With dan lefranc's ORIGIN STORY. Its a mysterious, complex comic book-style play about a superhero (or a super antihero) called pronoun. I am psyched as hell to be working on this with dan. Adam greenfield will be our dramaturg.

I went to the comic book shop on wed to pick up a few titles: a few deadman, and a new spidey and a new daredevil. I have a feeling I will be going in pretty deep. Also, have picked up scott (?) Mccloud's seminal work UNDERSTANDING COMICS.

Also, first offer is out there. Let us pray.

An audience?

We got some nice work today in the car museum - we are rehearsing in the auxiliary rehearsal hall which is part of an antique car museum. The conditions are not ideal - but hey, in nyc we are used to far more.

My concerns from yesterday which mostly consisted of "are we where we're supposed to be?" in the process seem unfounded. The guys have really bore down (beared down? Borne down?) And are, I feel, really making nice connections. It is really a play about three friends - so when these guys are just there being present with each other, the play really shines. Ah - the lesson of acting less

Andromache arrives monday. Joe the lighting designer saw a second runthrough today and I am grateful.

I worry a little about energy. With one rehearsal left itd be great to have a smooth energized run on sunday. Meanwhile, I am on a beach. All true.

What happened to my blog

Or "what happened to my blogging?"

Well, gentle readers, I've been seduced by the sunshine here in florida and I apologize. I will do my darndest as we head into to tech to catch you up on what's going on here at asolo.

I've three more rehearsals left - and michael edwards came to a runthru on saturday. I've been implementing many of his notes. As you may recall, I assisted michael way back when - during the drama league fellowship. I put in AMADEUS for him down at norfolk's virginia stage and that remains a lovely memory and great experience.

Michael has a great way of telling story: both connecting the actors to the tech as well as depicting the visual elements to tell the story. So - in short - I trust the guy.

I'd say his main critique was making sure one of the actors played the reality of the circumstances and wasn't commenting. Its something I'd been working on, so it was good to hear confirmation that I was on the right track. also I think having the artistic director give me notes was a nice jolt for the actors. They trust michael too and I am sure they have a good sense of where his notes were coming from

Its clear to me that the last quarter of the play needs work. It seems, under rehearsed. The transitions are vague.

Three rehearsals left. Andromache arrives monday.
