Third times a charm? Tomorrow is my interview for the tcg/nea career development program for theatre directors. Career development. That I guess the central question. How will I use this grant to develop myself artistically so that I can grow career-wise. I've been drawn very much to new writers and new works ever since a meeting with tim sanford a few years back

He told me to find my writer.

And I believe my collaboration with will eno was certainly a direct result of that advice. But will and I worked together for four years. And had some nice successes.(the flu season amd thom pain).

But there are other writers too. So having found my literary companion once. Can I find another?

I think I have been searching for the next collaborator.

When annie kaufmann won her obie this year, she thanked len jenkins, paula vogel and mac wellman for spawning a great new generation of playwrights. I concur. And now theaters are seeking out these new voices. Expect to see more works by sarah ruhl, will eno, ann washburn, sheila callaghan at the regional theater

It makes me curious - how will these writers adapt to the larger than downtown spaces? And the older more experienced and larger budgeted theaters: how will they adapt.

My objective is to find out how freelance and resident directors in regional theaters discover, develop and direct new works. Specifically, what questions do they ask the playwrights and when. More later.
